Gerard Byrne is Professor and Head of the Academic Discipline of Psychiatry within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Queensland. He is also the Director of the Older Persons’ Mental Health Service at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital and a Member of the Repatriation Medical Authority within the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. He is the Queensland Director of Advanced Training in Psychiatry of Old Age for the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. He has a longstanding research interest in anxiety disorders in older people and is co-developer of the Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI), which is in widespread use around the world and is available in more than 20 languages. He has extensive clinical trial experience in novel agents for Alzheimer’s disease and in adjunctive treatments for anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. He is a chief investigator on a $6.5 million NHMRC-funded study examining polygenic predictors of Alzheimer’s disease using advanced imaging techniques. He has over 200 publications, including three books.
