In this presentation, we will describe a program of work we have been undertaking on the evaluation of digital transformation in healthcare. We will begin by describing how the literature on evaluating digital transformation in healthcare is marked by a surprising lack of coherence and progress. We will then describe a lens from the organizational sciences – institutional theory – that we have found helpful for understanding these problems and what might be done about them (Burton-Jones et al. in press). We will also describe our ongoing research that is motivated by solutions we see from this new lens. In particular, our work suggests the need for a more evidence-based approach to evaluating and governing digital transformation, and we outline what current evidence appears to suggest.

A light lunch will be served at the PAH from 12 noon for those who RSVP by 21 August 2019.
