Teleophthalmology services have been introduced and successfully implemented for a range of conditions. However to date, no service delivery model has been developed for the provision of teleophthalmology services to nursing homes.

In a collaboration with CSIRO’s Australian eHealth Research Centre and QUT's School of Optometry, this study aims to develop a novel telehealth-based eyecare service delivery model. The aim of this model is to enable remote screening of eye problems of the residents of nursing homes and support nurses and healthcare workers to refer patients in a timely manner to ophthalmologists. The system will utilise an artificial intelligence system capable of disease grading and alerting screeners in cases where a referral is needed for a patient.
